Aftercare Instructions for Extractions and Oral Surgery
Do:
- Use Chlorhexidine mouthwash twice a day for 1 week. Normal toothbrushing can be started 24 hours after procedure (excluding periodontal surgery). Please ensure that toothbrushing and mouthwashing are separated by at least 2 hours as the calcium in toothpaste deactivates the mouthwash.
- Bite on a clean cotton handkerchief or bite pack (not tissue) for 30 mins constanly if bleeding occurs.
- If bleeding is not controlled after 30 mins, call the practice during office hours or go to your local A&E department.
- Take painkillers if required. Paracetamol and ibuprofen are effective. Avoid aspirin and avoid ibuprofen if you have asthma, have a known allergy to ibuprofen or have a stomach ulcer.
- Take it easy for the rest of the day.
- Remember that there is often some pain, swelling, soreness and bruising after a dental operation. There may also be difficulty opening the mouth. All this should significantly improve within 1 week. If not, contact the practice.
Do not:
- Mouth rinse or spit for the first 24 hours.
- Have food or drink for a few hours as you are still numb and may bite your lips, cheeks or tongue.
- Have cigarettes for at least 24 hours. Ideally, avoid them for one week because they can cause a very painful local infection.
- Eat hard foods for 24 hours.
- Bite your lips, cheeks or tongue as they are numb.
Sometimes, the surgical/extraction site fails to heal properly and a constant dull ache persists. Contact the practice if this is the case. If severe pain still persists after 48 hours, call 0207 353 5678.
