Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to fast before a cholesterol check?

We recommend that you fast for at least 8 hours prior to having a blood test for checking cholesterol. This means that you avoid all food and drink EXCEPT WATER. So it’s probably best that you make your blood test appointment for first thing in the morning. We can still do the test if you haven’t been able to fast for some reason, but it may need to be repeated if the results are borderline.

How much does it cost to have a cholesterol check?

We always measure a full blood fat profile which costs £33.80.

Can I get a repeat prescription?

If you have been prescribed the medication you require previously by the GP at Fleet Street Clinic you can fax through a written request for the medication to include the name, the dose and the amount needed. We will then let you know if it is possible to issue you a prescription without a consultation. There is a charge for a repeat prescription.

What other blood tests can I have?

We can offer the full range of tests. We would advise that you need to discuss this with the GP. If blood tests have been requested by another doctor we are happy to take the sample for you and would charge the laboratory costs only without the consultation fee.

How long do results take?

Most blood test results are available on a next day basis, though results can often be obtained faster id needed

If I have my smear test at Fleet Street Clinic do I still have to have one through the NHS?

No. If you choose to have a smear test at Fleet Street Clinic you can ask us to send the results to your NHS GP to add to your records. Just make sure you come with the name and address of your GP. It is best to have your smear test around the middle part of your menstrual cycle, so around 14 days after the beginning of your last period.

What method is used for examining the smear ?

Our laboratory uses the latest technology for examining the cells that are sampled when we take a cervical smear. The cells are spun to remove any impurities so that they are easier to examine. This means that there is less chance of having to come back for a repeat smear due to technical difficulties .

How much does a smear test cost?

The cost of a smear test is £70.60.

How long does the result take?

Usually 48-72 hours.
