Flight or Travel-Related Deep Vein ThrombosisTelegraph - DVT

DVT occurs when blood in the deep veins of the calf muscles and lower leg flows sluggishly and eventually clots.

This causes :

  • pain and swelling in the short term
  • a risk of sudden death arising from clots breaking off and travelling through the bloodstream to the heart and lungs
  • long term damage to leg veins resulting in reduced circulation and sometimes skin ulceration.

Prevention and Awareness

Sitting in a cramped position without moving for several hours - such as during long flights - increases the risk of this happening.

This justifies awareness and preventive action by travellers, especially those with other factors that increase their risk of DVT.

Our DVT Risk Calculator will help you assess your risk of DVT and learn about preventive measures.
