Deep Vein Thrombosis

What is Flight- or Travel-Related Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when blood in the deep veins of your body flows sluggishly and ultimately clots. It most commonly occurs in the veins of the calf muscles and the lower leg. There are not always noticeable symptoms, but the commonest symptoms are local pain, tenderness and swelling.

What are the effects of Deep Vein Thrombosis?

  • Pain and swelling in the immediate term
  • Long term damage to leg veins resulting in reduced circulation and sometimes skin ulceration
  • Risk of sudden death arising from clots breaking off and travelling through the bloodstream to the heart and lungs (or is rare circumstances, causing symptoms of a stroke)

Who is at risk from Deep Vein Thrombosis?

DVT is more common in people over 50. Certain conditions can mean that you are more susceptible to DVT such as:

  • A recent injury (especially to the lower legs)
  • Recent surgery
  • Cancer or cancer treatment
  • Being overweight
  • A family history of Deep Vein Thrombosis
  • Birth control pills or undergoing hormone therapy
  • Smoking
  • Prolonged immobility

Prevention and Awareness of Deep Vein Thrombosis

Simple precautions can help reduce the risk of DVT.

  • Avoid sitting in an immobile, cramped position – get up and move around the aircraft cabin at least once every hour.
  • Stretch, move your legs, and rotate each ankle several times in both directions, to help blood flow throughout your body.
  • Consider wearing compression stockings.
  • Obtain specialist advice – come and see us if you think you are at increased risk.

Our DVT Risk Calculator can help you assess your risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis, and point you in the direction of additional preventive measures.
